Inside The Beats | BGB & IL Present Jon Meyers of Johns Hopkins

Into the Beats steps DJ Jon Meyers, Princeton defenseman and former Inside Lacrosse coverman. His Tigers will be taking on Johns Hopkins tonight at 5 p.m. on ESPNU.

What are three songs on your iPod before a big game?

Million Voices — Otto Knows
Gold On the Ceiling — The Black Keys
Extreme Ways — Moby

If all else fails, what is your all time favorite go to pump up jam?

My Freshman year we came out to “Genesis” by Justice. The first drop in that song can get anyone going.

Would you rather be the biggest DJ in the world or the lead singer for the biggest rock band in the world from the 80s or 90s?

80’s rock band, hands down

What are your favorite genres? How has your music taste developed over your lacrosse career?

Since coming to college, electronic dance music has really taken off. I think every good memory I have from school has “Levels” playing somewhere in the background. I’ve always been into top 40, the big names in hip-hop and classic rock, however I think being on a college campus has exposed me to a lot more artists that aren’t as well known. I think the whole electropop/indie pop sound that artists like Foster the People and The Naked and Famous are developing is really cool too.

Is there an artist or band that mimics your style of play or is your counterpart in the music world? On top of that, what genre best describes your style of play?

I think from an outsider’s perspective, being a close defenseman can be pretty boring because we don’t score goals or make flashy plays. However, anyone who has been on the defensive end of the field knows that being a part of a great defensive unit is one of the best aspects of the game. So if I had to describe a music genre that isn’t fully understood by outsiders and revered by people who know it well… I think dubstep is most appropriate.

If one song could come on when you entered a room what would it be?

One year Jay-Z won a Grammy and as soon as he stood up from his seat to accept the award “On to the Next One” came on. It continued to play as he slowly walked toward the stage and it was one of the coolest things I’ve seen at an awards show. I would say I would like that song to come on every time I entered a room, but I’m not so sure it would have the same effect.

If you could mash up three songs into one what would you choose?

If someone could put Phil Collins, Skrillex and Kanye into one song I think they would have a real hit on their hands.

What songs are popular right now in the locker room? Who claims to be the team DJ? More importantly, who actually is the team DJ?

Paddling out by Miike Snow (Jacques lu Cont Remix) has been getting some play. Tarzan Boy by Baltimora is a team favorite too. While I don’t think anyone claims to be the team DJ, Andrew McCall has a strategically placed locker right next to the speakers, so he takes on most of the responsibility and does a bang up job.

Who has the worst taste in music taste on the team? Who has the best (besides you)?

Travis Boyce has the worst taste in music by a mile. For some reason he only listens to Natasha Bedingfield and Nickelback. Best taste in music has to go to Billy Coughlin. He is a die hard Phil Collins fan and he isn’t afraid to show it.

What best describes you and why, lead singer, guitarist or drummer?

Cow bell.

What are a few songs that headline your team’s warm up mix? And who is left in charge with the monumental decision of what goes on the warm up mix?

All the seniors get together to decide on the warm-up mix. We have a pretty balanced mix of house music, hip-hop and rock. Once we decide on all the songs I mix them together. Million Voices by Otto Knows, How Will I Know (Van Hooft & Forever Kid Remix) by Whitney Houston, Still Fly by the Big Tymers and Sweet Emotion by Aerosmith are a few of the highlights.

Usually each year a team develops an “anthem” that seems to get played after big wins or in times of need. What is your team’s anthem right now?

After big wins, we usually play “Return of the Mack” by Mark Morrison. It has been a tradition for a while now.

If you were a rapper who would be your hype man on stage with you?

Peter Smyth is usually really good at getting people to notice him.

What is the best live show you have ever attended? If you could attend and show or music event what would it be?

The best show I’ve seen was Band of Horses when they played in Grand Central Station in NYC in the summer of 2010. If I could attend one concert it would be Coachella, but we play Dartmouth that weekend so I don’t think my coach would be very happy.

How or where do you find new music?
A lot of my new music comes from friends on the team or around campus. In terms of blogs I usually check Dancing Astronaut, Fresh New Tracks, We are hunted and of course Big Green Beats.

Check out Jonathan’s soundcloud page for orginal remixes and mashups
