Timeflies - Exclusive Interview & “Cars, Money, Fame”

I know we featured this track a couple days ago but wanted to include it again for our exclusive interview with Timeflies below. They keep pumping out energetic and upbeat tracks with insanely catchy beats like this one that has a ton of different layers. These guys are ahead of the curve as music heads into new genres and uncharted territory with hypnotic, experimental beats like this.

P.S. I love the voice tag they put on all their tracks – the computerized “Timeflies” voice – that just gets me hyped for some reason
.

Exclusive Interview

Q: What’s are your name? Where are you from?
Going by Timeflies, we are Cal from Larchmont, NY and Rob Resnick from Montclair, NJ. East coast what it do.

Q: What made you choose your name?
Seemed like we were always on the music grind, but life and school were leaving us no time to do what we actually wanted to do, which was music. We kept making excuses for why we weren’t recording and then we realized that there were always gonna be excuses. We decided, time flies so lets get on it now… hence Timeflies.

Q: What made you start into music?
We’ve both been into music all our lives. Cal has always been into singing, most commonly blues and funk and always loved to rap as well. Rob has studied piano, guitar, and drums. Both of us knew we’d be devoting our lives to music in one way or another from a young age. So we decided to come together to try to blend whatever sounds we had and make it in to something we liked. Here we are…

Q: Who are your major influences?
We listen to incredibly different music. Cal has his roots in blues and hip hop (Muddy Waters, Janis Joplin and Big L) and Rob recently has been in a more electronic scene (anything from Xaphoon Jones to Flux Pavilion)

Q: If you could work with any artists/band who would it be? Why?
We always answer this differently because it’s so hard to narrow down– we would both love to pick the minds of the greats, the people who have made it to the top and stayed there just to learn. But from a purely musical perspective Cal would love to be with a live band like the Roots while Rob might was thinkin Joss Stone with her smooth voice.

Q: What’s your favorite venue to date and why? Do you have any upcoming shows?
Not necessarily a ‘venue’ but we played Tufts’ Spring Fling two years ago with our then funk band (Cal singing, Rob on drums) and got to open for Luda and Asher Roth. It was definitely the biggest show we’ve done so far and was a sick sick time. Yes! Dec 29th at Starboard Hudson in the city and of course the Morning After Tour coming up this spring. We’re also talking to a bunch of schools and looking into a few other tours, nothing we can publicize yet but we’ll be all over don’t worry.

Q: If you weren’t doing music where would you see yourself?
Starbucks baristas. No… Rob actually originally was majoring in electrical engineering but switched to music and philosophy sophomore year. Cal probably would have (and still dabbles in) the entrepreneurial world.

Q: Whose your favorite sports team and athlete?
Rob’s going Yankees but he probably can’t name more than 5 players. Cal is way more of a sports fan- his favorite player right now being Amare Stoudemire on the Knicks, the Garden’s back baby!

Q: What do you do when your not doing music??
Think about doing music. That and party.

Q: Any last words?
We’re just real excited to be where we are right now. We are taking nothing for granted and just hope to put out music that people can vibe to. And furthermore, especially if you made it to the end of this interview, you’re a boss – theres a lot of crap out there and blogs like this spend time sorting through it so you don’t have to. Radio can be great, but the internet is where its at if you want something thats not on your little sisters ipod, so use it!
